1. How to Succeed in Web Design

Last week I wrote about one of my recent finds, The Web
Design Business Kit by SitePoint. Hopefully you've had a
chance to read the sample chapters by now, downloadable
at:

http://www.sitepoint.com/launch/info/2/4

During the past few days I've had a chance to dig further
into the two vinyl binders that I had delivered to my
door just days after ordering the product... I thought
I'd share with you a few tiny tidbits of information that
I'm sure you'll find useful in your own business:

1. Try surveying your competitors customers. Most web
design companies have a freely available portfolio/client
list on their site... just call them up, tell them you're
conducting a survey whose results will be released to
"Large Newspaper". Ask how they found their web design
firm and whether they were satisfied.

Most people will go out of their way to help you if they
know the results will be released to a major publication
and you'll gain a lot of insight. Compile the results
and issue a press release to local media.

2. Don't charge by the hour or by the project, charge by
the value you deliver. For example, excellent copywriters
often charge $20,000+ for a few pages of text that may
not take them any more time to put together than other
copywriters who charge $1000. The difference? Results and
experience, not the amount of time it took to do the
work.

If you can prove that your customer will make money by
using you, they'll choose you almost every time.

3. Offer a 100% money back guarantee. It removes risk for
your customer, and you'll never get called on it because
your clients will approve every part of the site.

4. Ask customers to honestly rate your service, and do
whatever tweaks are necessary to get 10 out of 10.
Delighted your customers refer clients, just satisfied
customers don't. Send your clients cards, forward
interesting news clippings and take them out for dinner.

Send them a regular newsletter and call them from time to
time if you find a useful tool that they can benefit from
(i.e. ClickTracks log analyzer). If they trust you and
you're sincere, you can easily upsell 90% of your
customers on a new site feature if you've kept in contact
with them after building their site.

That's just a tiny fraction of what "The Web Design
Business Kit" contains. Over 400 pages of step-by-step
guidance from the CEO's of one of Australia's most
successful Web Design firms and over 60+ editable
documents ready for use in your own business. I couldn't
recommend this product more strongly, the investment will
pay for itself many times over:

5. Define Your USP

The Internet has brought a whole world of clients to your
doorstep, but it has also made it more important to
differentiate yourself.

Nowadays, it's not enough to define yourself as a
freelance writer or designer, for example. You need to
define why the client should use you, rather than any of
the thousands of other freelancers worldwide.

Think carefully about what you have to offer to the
client, and work out what makes your service special.
Then make sure you promote this unique selling
proposition (USP) as heavily as you can.

Defining your own niche in the market can make a real
difference to your global sales.

Since then, I've edited a sales letter, a follow-up letter, an 11-page Web site, and a brochure. I'm 'on call' to do pinch-hit proofreading for a medical newsletter editor in Florida ..and I've landed a gig editing a new Canadian magazine coming out this fall. All this from taking a chance on Go Freelance."
