Proofreading – Perfect For Work-from-Home Moms and Home-Based Businesswomen

For a long time, proofreading has been something of a male preserve. not exclusively, but to a large extent. but recently, especially with the massive expansion of the work-from-home mom phenomena, proofreading has become the cash-generating activity of choice for thousands of women.

Firstly, let's take a look at why proofreading has been such a male-dominated occupation for so long. I mean, it's not as if there's much heavy lifting involved! There's very little data in relation to this subject, but one possible explanation for this gender bias could be found in the fact that proofreading, up until about ten years ago, was part and parcel of the print industry, and the print industry - with its typesetters, compositors and plate-makers - was something of a working man's preserve. Old habits die hard and like, unfortunately, tends to beget like, so the proofreading 'sub-industry' continued to recreate itself very much in its own image. As a rule, the gender that dominates a particular profession will resist the threat of change from its opposite number. Just ask any man working as a nurse throughout the seventies and eighties.

So, why the gender shift in proofreading? well, it goes without saying that there is no logical reason why women shouldn't make highly-effective proof readers. As a matter of fact, there's a great deal of scientific evidence to support the view that proofreading is the perfect profession for women.

In a recent study of 43 developed countries, 15-year-old girls were ahead of boys in literacy skills.
In the United States, girls are significantly ahead of boys in writing ability at all levels of primary and secondary education.
Female brains are more compact than male brains and are more densely packed with neurons, particularly in the region responsible for language.
Females have language functions evenly spread throughout both hemispheres of the brain, while in males these functions are more concentrated in the left hemisphere. this makes males more prone to language disorders such as dyslexia.

Given all of the above, we can only deduce that the lack of women proofreaders in the past was as a result of a dearth of equal opportunity.

And, then, along came the internet.

The ability to make money online working from home is something that women have grasped with both hands, far more effectively it has to be said, than their male counterparts. you only have to look at the support structures women have created online (the working mom's forums, for example) to see just how successfully they've staked their claim in the work-from-home territory. Men are lagging behind in this virtual world, perhaps because they lack the natural urge to cooperate; perhaps because they still persist in their view of the internet as an online marketplace, whereas women tend to see it for what it really is: a vast conversation, with commercial opportunities available to those who are able to participate in said conversation in the most energetic and vivacious fashion.

Whatever the reasons, there can be no doubt that work-from-home moms and home-based businesswomen have the natural capabilities and the necessary online savvy to make proofreading a truly viable career option.
