Your Questions About Freelance Writing For Magazines

Charles asks…

How much should I charge per word for freelance writing?

I'm wanting to get into doing part-time freelance writing and don't know what I should charge. I wrote a couple articles in college for our school paper and philosophy journal and recently had something published in Relevant Magazine. I was thinking around .20 or .25?

admin answers:

If you charge that much, you won't get much business. Most freelance writers who take 'contracts' either get the contract for the 'finished piece' at a negotiated price, or uses a 'per page' charge of anywhere from $1.50-10.00 per page, depending on size and content.

Thomas asks…

Freelance writing as a teen? Will pick BA?

I do not have much to put on a resume apart from things I have written for school. I do have one article I wrote for a local horse magazine and that is about it.

What are some good online places to look for work? Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

I know it's tough to get started when you don't have a portfolio yet but there are some things you can do to get that started.

You could consider writing small pieces that don't pay just to get some published work under your belt and you can usually find these type of offers on Craig's List under the writing opportunities or writing gigs sections.

You could consider starting your own blog and write good articles/posts so you can showcase published work there.

As for where to find the work there are all kinds of places on the internet for this - http://www.freelancedaily.net compiles job offers daily and they offer a free trial so you should check that out too.

Good luck!

Mark asks…

How do you get into freelancing for history magazines?

I want to start researching and writing for history magazines. How do you submit your work and what are some magazines and journals that accept freelance work?

admin answers:

Writing for DOLLARS! It a website which allows you to find out the guidlines of various publishers in various fields. This link, http://www.writingfordollars.com/GuidelinesDB_Lookup.cfm, will put you in touch with the sites history section. You can then scroll through to find various book and magazine pubilishers and check what their guidlines are.

Jenny asks…

Does writing freelance pay well? I am looking into a job in the paper as a free lance writer for extra money?

I am sure it is part time and it seems perhaps for a magazine or local paper. Does it pay based on pieces or words usually? How does it usually work?

admin answers:

The payment compensation for your work would truly depend on whatever agreement that you reached with the newspaper publisher. Many small scale newspapers pay a flat fee of $5-$50 per article. Other freelance writing jobs, however, get paid by the word, usually $.01 to $.05 per word.

Have you not tried to contact them about employment at their company? Unfortunately, they will be the only ones who can tell you exactly what your compensation would be.

If you are interested in finding out about some reputable sites online, check out The E-ZMoney Guide. Although it's a small list, I have made about $2,000 over a period of months were I often worked only 1-2 hours a day.

Best of luck!

Daniel asks…

What master's degree is best for a career in magazine writing?

Hello!

I am looking into going back to school for my master's degree and am having difficulty deciding which major to focus on. My intent is to graduate with a degree that will best facilitate a career in writing for a magazine. I would like to be employed by the magazine (something along the lines of Cosmo, Seventeen, etc.) instead of going the freelance route. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding which master's degree would be best fit for such a career - Journalism, English, or Communications?

Thanks!

admin answers:

Journalism
