Your Questions About Self-image Survey

William asks…

Gender, body weight image and weight loss methods?

We have an ongoing science project in school about body weight, what is a healthy body weight, body weight self image, and how to get to and maintain healthy body weight.

We did some surveys and then weighed people on a scale and grouped their weight into underweight, normal weight and overweight. The results show that girls more typically overestimate their weight (i.e. think their overweight) when they are within the normal range, and guys usually underestimate their weight (usually think they are OK when they are overweight).

Girls seem to be less happy with their body size, body shape, than guys.

For those overweight, girls seemed to prefer dieting as a method to lose weight, compared with guys who seemed to favor dieting and exercising almost equally.

A higher % of girls said they skipped two meals a day compared with guys. A closer % said they skipped one meal per day, but it was still more girls than guys.
Roughly equal % said they would take a drug if it helped them lose or maintain weight.

I have to write a report on this and interpret the influence of gender on these results and also consider what factors influence the differences in the results where they exist and why there are no differences where they don't exist.

Any comments would help me.

Thanks

Alex
I almost forgot. The question was also asked in class (like an extra credit type thing) whether different motivation methods should be used for each gender based on these results or not. Justify them with the data.

You have quite a few flaws in your sample, and many people have pointed out a lot of them...

To begin with, the study itself is kind of silly - there is no such thing as a "healthy body weight." Each person has a unique body shape and size, and there can be a bunch of influences on how big/small a person is. For instance, I'm 5'11" and weigh about 195 at the moment. I played football in college, and at my largest size, I was about 205-210, which is somewhat undersized, even for a safety. Now calculating my BMI (using simply height and weight ratios), I'd have a BMI of 29.3 at that weight, which would barely place me below the obese category. Do you think that the starting safety for a D-1 school is obese?

For someone my height to get into the "normal" range, I'd have to drop down to 175 lbs, and even then, I'd be on the heavier side of "normal."

My point is that using the "cheap" BMI calculator is more accurate than your survey because it actually takes height into consideration, whereas your survey focuses on weight. As you can see by just my personal example, even when factoring in height, it doesn't explain people's weights very well.

The most accurate way for you to do this study would be to calculate people's body fat percentage and/or BMI using real equipment. The most accurate one (to my knowledge) is a tank that is filled with water, and the water displacement of a person is measured upon them entering the tank. From there you can use the differing densities of bone/muscle, calculate the persons bouyancy, and ultimately determine the fat percentage of the person. To be even more accurate, you would have to have each person do the trial numerous times. Afterwards, you would throw out the high and low numbers, and then find the median, which you would use for that person's BMI or body fat percenage (depending upon which you used).

As you can see, that method would take considerable time and money (something I'm assuming you don't have at school). What I would suggest (and your school may have one of these) is using an electronic device to measure the person in the studies body fat, and then redo the study from there. Often times wrestling teams will keep one of these around to see if it is sensible to make someone lose weight. If your school doesn't have one, it can be purchased for a few hundred dollars. A word of caution tho - they aren't incredibly accurate. I would recommend doing at least three trials on it for each person and keeping the middle one.

Anyway, as far as how gender influences this is shown by the data - although more girls were underweight, they felt as though they were heavy. It is a product of the society we live in - girls in magazines, on tv, etc. All are incredibly thin (many to a point where it's unhealthy). Girls see them and think that in order to make themselves attractive, they must get to that point. As far as guys go, guys get away with a lot. Look at television. In any sitcom you watch, you'll have the fat, goofy, and adorably inept father with the smoking hot, smart, nagging, trophy wife. Guys see this and realize that if they're funny and likeable, they can still get the girls, despite being dumb and fat. Girls face much more pressure than guys do to maintain their weight/looks.

David asks…

How Thick Are You...............?

I've heard that a woman's waist should not exceed 80 cm (about 31.5 inches, sorry, I'm an Australian that uses metric), but to me there's a big difference between a 5"0 girl with an 31.5inch waist and a 5"9 girl with an 31.5 inch waist.

Is there a better height:circumference ratio that would be more accurate? What circumference should a 5"6 girl in her late teens be?

I've tried this in diet and fitness and all i get is spam and irrelevan crap.

I'm just brushing in on "healthy" BMI wise, but I don't look it, so I'm doing various things to decrease my circumference, but I'm not sure if its a warped self image or not, so I figured I could survey the public that I could have a general guideline.

Waist should be no more than 40% of height.

So if woman is 60" waist should be 24" max

If woman is 66" waist should be 26.4" max

If woman is 69" waist should be 27.6" max.

people between 13-21 .. need your help plz .. !!?

Hi there, I am a student currently studying a Senior Home Economics, Textiles Studies Course. To help me with my studies, I am currently conducting a survey to investigate how the influence of fashion & lifestyle impact on the modern day adolescent and their self image. Your name, number or address don't not need to be taken as this survey is confidential. I would appreciate it if you may email me your email address through my profile page so that I may send you a copy of the survey.
The survey is done up in MSWord 07, however it is compatible with Windows 97-2003.
It contains graphics & a layout too compicated to post on Y!Answers.
Please, I am not a spammer, I just need feedback so that I am able to write up my report.
Again, I would appreciate it if you may email me your email address through my profile page so that I may send you a copy of the survey. However, if you dont mind posting it in your answer, that too, is fine with me, but for privacy reasons I would advise against it.
