Freelancing During the Holidays

You work at home. It’s great.

It’s great, that is, until the relatives all come over and invade your office space. No one understands that if you are going to pay for that nice gift you gave Uncle Arty, you need to finish up those two ebooks by Christmas.

At times like this, I fall back on my “second” office. Starbucks. I live in Queens, but if I really want to hide—ahem—work efficiently when away from my relatives, I go into Manhattan. There is a Starbucks on almost every corner. The relatives have no hope of finding me.

Having said that, it’s important to remember that it is the holiday season. Get some work done early in the morning and late at night, and leave the rest of the time open for the family. If you’re freelancing, it’s probably because you want freedom—don’t become a slave to the business. This is definitely one of those times when you should be willing to sacrifice some comfort to hang out with the family.
