New Year’s Resolutions

I haven’t settled on a business New Year’s Resolution yet.

Yes I know I should have done that a week or so ago. But it’s my policy not to settle on a resolution until after I finish looking through all of my records and comparing where I am with where I want to be. I’m finishing that up this week, and I’ll have something by the end of the month.

Are you thinking this is a lot of trouble over nothing? I don’t. I think the new year is a great time to try and fix at least one thing that is broken—or not working properly—in my life. And my business is always a work in progress.

I think the real trouble comes when we think we’ve “made it.” If you hit a certain financial goal, or have a certain amount of clients, or whatever, that is the time you are most in danger of making a mistake. Why? Because that is when you relax.

I’m not saying you need to stay in a constant state of tension about your business. There’s no point to that. But wouldn’t you kick yourself if you lost your business—or started slipping up—because of a little detail you overlooked?

That is my personal nightmare, so every year, I take a critical look at what my business is doing. Only then do I settle on my next resolution. It’s coming. Stay tuned.
